What's in a name? Part 1

A lot....

For example, in college, there would be three or two (most of the time, two what with my blockmate and coursemate who has the same name as I do) of us with the same name. So, I was called by my nickname. But, that was among blockmates. Most of the time, I was called by my first name as reflected in the class cards. The first K* was lucky because she was the first, I was always the middle K, if we were three.

Funnily enough, when I was in elementary, our classmates would call us using our last name. That's strange right? Same thing in high school, although, we started calling each other using our first names. Unless, you had a funny first name, like "Baby" then we'd resort to a more acceptable second name.

I could always distinguish classmates from elementary, high school or college. If they called me by my nickname and they're not family, chances are, they were my college classmates. Or if they called me by my first name, then they were probably my elementary or high school classmates.

When I attended graduate school, I would usually prefer to be called using my first name. Less complicated that way. Same is true at work. I don't care if there are 20 of us at work with the same first name. That's my name and I have a right to it.

After all, its a person's right to have a name...

So what's in a name? A lot...
